A philosopher in Hong Kong, who for obvious reasons does not want to be identified, writes:
A historian, Rowena HE Xiaoqing (Associate Prof) was fired from the Chinese University of Hong Kong after having her visa extension denied by the HK Immigration dept for what I assume are political reasons. (Her scholarship focuses on the Tiananmen Square crackdown.) At the moment, her profile is still on the CUHK website (archived here). A chilling case of for those of us here in HK (by design, I imagine) and one I think humanities scholars should be aware of if they are considering taking up a post here. Let it be perfectly clear that the Hong Kong government will scrutinize your research for national security (sic) concerns:

At this point, I know many Hong Kong scholars, in philosophy and law, are looking to leave. There is a huge opportunity for Australasian and Singaporean universities here.
