The atrocities and resulting war in Israel and Gaza has certainly brought them out of the woodworks. Zareena Grewal (an anthropologist it appears, teaching in American Studies and other area-study fields at Yale), who apparently has three children but no capacity for empathy for non-Paltestinian people's children, has brought a firestorm of protest down on her head for her chillingly stupid and cruel tweets. (Naturally, some benighted undergraduate started a petition calling for her to be fired for her lawful speech.) Meanwhile, a contributor at Dissent wrote about some of the other depraved responses only to elicit this utterly witless rejoinder from Gabriel Winant, whom I'm sorry to see is an assistant professor of history here. The author of the original piece responds appropriately to this sorry display by Professor Winant.
One certainly learns a lot about the moral emptiness and emotional depravity of people at moments like this.
Again, I encourage readers to sign this letter which takes seriously the idea that human lives matter, and matter equally, even during war.
(Thanks to Brian Morton for the pointer to the first Dissent piece.)
