A propos last week's post, Nature also ran an article on the socioeconomic background of current faculty, which found that,
faculty are up to 25 times more likely to have a parent with a Ph.D. Moreover, this rate nearly doubles at prestigious universities and is stable across the past 50 years. Our results suggest that the professoriate is, and has remained, accessible disproportionately to the socioeconomically privileged, which is likely to deeply shape their scholarship and their reproduction.
That certainly helps explain the triumph of "race" and "gender" as topics in recent philosophy, including at elite departments, while Marxism and the Marxist tradition languishes in obscurity at most of those same places. But it also explains the so-called "racial disparity," which, like so much else, is really a class disparity.
