Philosopher David Velleman (Johns Hopkins) writes:
I am writing to announce the launch of The Raven, a new magazine of philosophy edited by me and David Johnson with support from the philosophy department at Johns Hopkins. Our mission is to publish original philosophy written for intellectually curious readers with or without academic training in the discipline, reviving an essayistic style of philosophy that was more common in academic venues as recently as thirty years ago but has gradually disappeared.
More information about the magazine and its editorial board is available on our site:

That issue should appear by the fall, with issues appearing biannually at first and perhaps quarterly in the further future. We are starting as an online, open-access magazine, but may publish in print or change our business model depending on circumstances. We are looking for pitches from authors with philosophy training to write one of three types of pieces:
FEATURE: 3,000 to 10,000 words making an original philosophical contribution in a style that is engaging to read and intelligible without specialist expertise.
SHORT ESSAY: 800 to 2,000 words offering philosophical insight or argument that does not require a longer exposition to convey.
REVIEW: 2,500 to 5,000 words addressing a work of philosophy that is forthcoming, recently published, or of lasting significance.
