MOVING TO FRONT, ORIGINALLY POSTED MARCH 14--VARIOUS UPDATES, MOSTLY FOR CHICAGO/ILLINOIS, FEWER NOW FOR NEW YORK CITY
Just a snapshot of what's going on in one metropolis, that hasn't (yet!) been hit as bad as NYC or Seattle or parts of Northern California; I'll update this periodically. Illinois is doing a fair bit of testing, but not nearly enough. Technically these are the numbers for Illinois, but almost all the cases are in the Chicago metropolitan area (9.5 million people are in the Chicago metro area, Illinois has 12.5 million altogether, Cook County, where Chicago is, has 5.2 million people; the data is broken out starting March 18):
March 10: 11 confirmed cases

March 12: 32 confirmed cases (nearly tripled in two days)
March 13: 46 confirmed cases
March 14: 64 confirmed cases (doubled in two days)
March 15: 93 confirmed cases (doubled in two days)
March 16: 105 confirmed cases

Some social distancing measures and closures started going into effect the week beginning Monday, March 9 and will accelerate significantly the week starting Monday, March 16. (UPDATE: A statewide "lockdown" went into effect on Saturday, March 21 at 5 pm.)
ADDENDUM: Via philosopher Mark Couch (Seton Hall), here's some comparative data for cases just in New York City (whose population is about 8.5 million): they had 153 confirmed cases on March 13, and have 213 confirmed case on March 14. You can see a current report for New York State here. Here's the March 14 report for the entire state (many of these counties--e.g., Westchester, Nassau, much of Suffolk--are essentially NYC suburbs, with many residents who work in NYC):

MARCH 15 UPDATE: about 27 hours later in New York State, New York City is up to 329, Westchester County is up to 196, Nassau County is at 98, and Suffolk is at 47. It's good the growth in Westchester is slowing, probably due to the outbreak having started there and people taking precautions more quickly. NYC cases have doubled in two days, the key will be to slow that down.
MARCH 16: 463 confirmed cases in NYC, 220 in Westchester, 109 in Nassau, and 63 in Suffolk.
