In addition to the age of the population in Italy, these figures probably also have something to do with the horrible situation there. Let us hope that the draconian lockdown of the country will ease the burden. (As of yesterday, Germany had reported about 3750 cases and 8 deaths, for a mortality rate [crudely estimated] of about .2% (a bit worse than seasonal flu)--this will surely go up, but hopefully the high ICU capacity of the German medical system will help significantly.)
