I'm very pleased to report that Ryan Doerfler, a lawyer/philosopher currently at the University of Pennsylvania, has accepted a senior offer from the Law School here, where he will start this summer. My law readers will know Doerfler for his already influential work on statutory interpretation, work that draws on his expertise in philosophy of language and epistemology. This is an exciting appointment for law & philosophy here at Chicago; he is only the second philosophy PhD on our relatively small law faculty (fewer than 40 tenure-stream lines), although the third philosopher! (My colleague Martha Nussbaum, the eminent political philosopher, has her PhD in classics, not philosophy, as some readers may know.) We are approaching 10% philosophers!
