This episode is unusual only because an adult, the philosopher Leslie Green (Oxford & Queen's U) intervened after this grad student at Queen's had the outburst, below, after he insulted me out of the blue on Twitter and I blocked him:
Mr. Jokic deleted his stupid tweet when confronted by an adult. But the real question is why more faculty aren't stepping up and doing the same thing? I realize many aren't on Twitter, but many are. And even if you're not on Twitter, you might want to inform yourself about how your students are behaving, if not self-destructing, on social media. Remember that twitter, which is full of a lot of clueless folks, tends to reinforce the worst behavior: someone who is ruining his or her reputation even as a graduate student may be getting the message from the Twitterati that they're funny, wonderful, etc.
