UPDATE: No posting is too trivial for some anonymous sanctimonious idiot to let it pass. Into my inbox appears the following e-mail from "Dasein Brown": "Breyer also cited Camus, a philosopher, but of course you wouldn't mention that on your blog. Probably because he wasn't a 'real' philosopher. Your petty biases are quite off-putting." "Petty biases" are one thing, naked stupidity another. Justice Breyer cited a novel by Camus, and not even one of the more philosophically rich ones. Sartre didn't think Camus was much of a philosopher, as I recall, and I'm not aware of any philosophers who do, though he's a fabulous and deep writer to be sure.
ANOTHER: My pseudonymous correspondent writes: "Perhaps you should have added to your 'Fourth of July opinion poll' a category akin to 'emailing snide comments to Brian Leiter' because that's exactly what I did yesterday (though I should point out that, like many Leiter readers, I was also DRINKING ALL DAY). Tipsy + bad mood= snotty, inane comment to Mr. Leiter. My apologies. In retrospect, I hated The Plague [the Camus novel Breyer mentioned]. I really can't excuse my comments, but I hope that you will forgive me." My thanks for the gracious mea culpa.
