Synthese, Petition, Boycott

Although the focus of the current petition is on the disclosure of information and the editorial misconduct leading to the disclaimer, I do want to clarify (in response to a number of e-mailed questions) that a boycott is not yet off the table.  I've already heard from some signatories to the current petition that they have declined to referee for Synthese or withdrawn papers from consideration at Synthese because of their concern about this issue.  (ADDENDUM:  One such case noted here.)  I am hopeful that the editors will respond in a more appropriate fashion to the petition than they did to the initial open letter from the Guest Editors.  If they do so, then I would expect any interest in a boycott of the journal to recede.  (I was surprised to see that on one philosophy of science blog--with a readership that obviously utlizes Synthese substantially--fully a third of respondents to a poll favored a boycott!  Since many readers of that blog have signed the petition, I would imagine that number will go up if there is not a reasonable response to the issues raised in the petition.)
