Here's a great poster that philosopher Christopher Pynes (Western Illinois University) prepared, which I saw last week when I was visiting his department. I asked if he would share it with readers of the blog, and he kindly agreed:
Professor Pynes is happy to have other departments borrow the idea. He writes:
Some things I would suggest departments do. Most schools have a university department with a title like "Documents and Printing Services" and they have people who will create posters from scratch or develop an idea for a small fee. They typically print these posters too. So, the image we used was a free image obtained I believe off Wikimdia Commons, but it might have been a library of congress photo -- I don't remember.
The point is philosophy departments should use these document production resources to their advantage to create promotional material. And anyone can use the slogan from this poster to help recruit majors. (When the poster is printed there isn't a white boarder.) And the nice thing is that after the poster is made, if you get a digital copy of the poster, and you should, you can use the image on a department webpage like this.
If people have questions about it, I am more than willing to answer emails on this and other major recruitment ideas. Our poster has been fairly successful in driving traffic to our department webpage as well. This is an important recruitment tool as well.
I am also providing a public link the the bigger version of the file for people who are interested in seeing it full size. Here is the public link from my dropbox folder.
