Already Tomorrow
It is already tomorrow
And surprise
The morning line is ten to one
It will be like yesterday
Once you’re in your groove
It’s hard to deviate
Each day reflects the life you’ve chosen
Or the life that came upon you
And the days go rolling by
The little cloned sweethearts
Until only the calendar
Tells you which is which
Why even the President
Is caught up like us
And we begin to see it
Once the campaign’s promise fades
His days too are like the ones before
And the new becomes the old
And change deflates to stasis
And hope becomes hopeless
He is what he was
As we are what we are
Why should we expect another
To break the familiar mold
To break his particular mold
And become someone
We wished he would be
Freer than we are
What then sustains us
Through the echoing days
Is it vampish illusion
That gives a gloss to sameness
As we bring the curtain down
On just another day
And look forward to tomorrow
As if magic were in play
As if ineluctability
Could be wished away
