Authenticity
From my dining room above the treetops
I watch the night expand to swallow the light
Aligned in miniature the distant downtown towers
Unfold the bravado of man-made brightness
Do you ever wonder why you are who you are
Furtively though briefly thinking how you came to be
Thoughts that call up harder questions
About the choices that you made
Why you made them if indeed you did
And beyond these small profundities this:
What that demarcates your life is truly yours
Was shaped with the clarity of your secret heart
So that you are present in all your acts
The wind shifts the sky grows troubled
Lush summer trees twist and flail
And the skyline collapses into a vagueness
It is all the answer you can muster
As to who you are and what of you is yours
