Story here. (Thanks to Michael Weisberg for the pointer.)
UPDATE: Huw Price (Sydney) writes:
The Australian piece on the "exodus" of Australian philosophers seemed a little one-sided, to me. A quick count reveals that about 40% of my colleagues here at Sydney are imports, who first came to Australia after graduate school. The list includes both senior and junior people. There are several others who (like me) have returned to Australia in recent years, after working elsewhere. And the mix is broadly similar elsewhere in Australia (and NZ), I think.
So without denying that there are and have been difficulties in some departments, I wanted to counter the impression that the Australian discipline as a whole is a sinking ship. Just as for many years, well-qualified philosophical rats are moving in both directions; and much of the real story is about the attractions of the local philosophical environment, as well as the commendable openness of its borders.
That strike me as a fair assessment, and useful supplement to the linked article.
