Philosopher Mark Sacks at the University of Essex writes:
I’ve never before sent out an invitation to sign an online petition, and I hope you will forgive what I know might be an unwelcome use of email.
Please read the letter below. It is strongly worded, but if you agree with its content you can sign it online by following this link: http://www.petitiononline.com/1l2a1r7r/ . It was drafted by Larry Abramson, a leading Israeli artist, who is also a life-long friend whose political (and other) credentials are beyond doubt. He asked me to send it to friends, and in response to the question I put to him has said that he would not want to limit signatures to Israeli citizens, given that conflict in the region is not merely a regional concern.
Do such petitions do any good? It is hard to know. One might hope that Israel, as a nation heir to the Enlightenment and cosmopolitan values, takes seriously educated opinion. Please consider signing.
UPDATE: I'm adding another link to the petition, since some folks had trouble with the first one.
