UPDATED 2012
As I noted several months back, one of our outstanding PhD students, Neil Sinhababu, had won a Charlotte W. Newcombe Fellowship in the 2005-06 competition. It turns out that only one other philosophy student won support this past year: Japa Pallikkathayil, a PhD student at Harvard University.
Having won a Newcombe myself many years ago, and received around that time a list of past winners, I knew that in most years four or five philosophy PhD students had received awards, and sometimes many more. (Note that Newcombes are restricted to students whose dissertations are related to "ethical and religious values"; winners come from a variety of fields besides Philosophy, including History, Religion, English, sometimes Anthropology, sometimes Sociology.) From the Woodrow Wilson Foundation, which administers the Newcombes, I got a complete list of philosophy winners since the awards began in 1981. The complete list reveals that this is not the first year in which there have been relatively few philosophy winners. It is also an impressive list, with the vast majority of recipients not only securing academic positions, but a majority doing so in research universities and leading liberal arts colleges, and many emerging as now well-known figures in moral, political, and legal philosophy. I print, below, the names of all winners of Newcombes who, at the time, were PhD students in philosophy. The winner's name is followed by the year of the award, the name of the graduate school in parentheses, and then the current institutional affiliation (if not in philosophy, that is noted in parentheses). Where no institutional affiliation is listed for a winner, this is because I could not find any current information. In the case of more recent winners, it is more likely that the philosopher is still in graduate school than that he or she is no longer in academia. Please e-mail me corrections.
