Steven Rosenfeld has an insightful new piece concerning Congress's recent behavior with regard to the renewal of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 (see here details). Rosenfeld suggests that old-fashioned means of stealing votes a la the South before 1965 (and Ohio in 2004!) pose as much of a threat to democracy as potential tampering with voting machines. When these two factors are considered together, it does not give one much confidence in the upcoming elections. Indeed, it makes one wonder when we will simply quit pretending we were ever a truly representative democracy in the first place.
