A few readers have inquired on this subject, which I have to admit I've not been following very closely. Pharyngula, however, has some apt comments here and here. (This story also supports some of Pharyngula's points.) Also striking, of course, was the Vatican's intervention. All of which, for some reason, brings to mind the observation of the Revolutionary Association of the Women of Aghanistan: "Fundamentalism is the mortal enemy of civilised humanity."
Meanwhile, David Velleman (Philosophy, NYU) comments on the American media's handling of the matter, while Chris Bertram (Philosophy, Bristol) effectively satirizes the American right's reaction to the whole affair.
UPDATE: Also thoughts on the matter from Ruchira Paul.
