We Know the News
We know the news
It is not necessary to publish it
We know that humans are beasts
Up close or at a distance
Face to face or faceless
We carry this knowledge most of our days
Sometimes it bends us
Sometimes it drives men mad
Sometimes it gives pleasure
For we are after all beasts
Children do not know this at once
The unfortunate are early learners
We can see it gnarl them
Gnaw their souls’ virginity
Annul the memory of joy
No one will take responsibility for this
Always others are blamed
Some too remote to contemplate
Some already dead
Some not even real
None of those about whom we are certain
Are among those named
Nor can there be any demand for justice
For even the blamers are not blameless
We might as well seek punishment for ourselves
