This is pathetic, and symptomatic of the sick political times we live in in America. What better way in a university to determine if Ward Churchill (or, for that matter, Paul Campos or anyone else) has an idea in his head than a scholarly forum where he can articulate and defend his ideas? But Colorado can't host one, because of "security concerns." If the University can not make good on the promissory note to host such an event at another time, then any faculty member ought to think twice before accepting a job there.
UPDATE: A Colorado grad student writes (this is circa 7:15 pm Central Time) that the Churchill event is back on. Eyewitness accounts will be welcome, assuming the event goes off. Kudos to the University if they pull it off. This is what ought to happen at a university. The next major event will be when Paul Campos defends his sophomoric book on jurisprudence, and why it is protected by academic freedom (it is, don't worry!).
ANOTHER UPDATE: See the U of Colorado updated press release here and this news item, which suggests only a lawsuit by Churchill allowed the speech to go forward.
