'Tis the time of year when students and faculty start to inquire about plans for the new PGR...so here's the scoop:
(1) Board members are stil nominating evaluators--I expect some 500 philosophers from the U.S., Britain, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Europe will get invitations this year to participate in the on-line surveys.
(2) We expect to conduct the surveys during September--this means faculty changes that occur by September 1 can still be reflected in the new surveys.
(3) For the first time, evaluators will be able to offer not only overall evaluations of faculties, but also to score departments in their own areas of specialization; the Advisory Board overwhelmingly approved this proposal. (We will not publish the mean score for the specialty evaluations, since these too often involve assessments of single individuals on a faculty; we will publish either the median score, or the rounded mean, for the top three groupings, corresponding roughly to the existing Excellent, Strong, Also Notable.)
(4) The new PGR itself, for 2004-06, will be published not later than mid-November, and hopefully by the end of October. Having just concluded a new contract with Blackwell through 2010 for the Report, it will continue to be available at the Blackwell-maintained site: www.philosophicalgourmet.com.
