...is here, wherein a blogger who apparently recognizes that intelligent design creationism is nonsense, nonetheless reads this posting of mine in which I wrote that,
"[W]hen there are legal arguments on both sides of a question--say, whether the Establishment Clause applies to the states--to adopt the side that has repulsive moral and political consequences is lunatic."
and concludes (see the comments) that it means:
"All Leiter is sayin' is: 1. I don't want religion in schools; 2. Thereore, I like the incorporation doctrine, 'cuz it prevents religion in schools; 3. Therefore, people who oppose the incorporation doctrine are lunatics, because they oppose what I like. A pathetic, amateur argument, if ya ask me."
Happily, no one asked, or will ask, him. Even forgetting the sophomoric idea that opposition to theocracy is a "preference," what's really scary here is the inability to read plain English.
What must it be like to be this cognitively impaired?
(Let me note that the comment quoted is by one "Navy Davy" [see below], though the author of the posting, "Von," appears, in the comments section, to agree with it; from e-mail correspondence, it appears this may not be his view, in which case look for a further update here.)
UPDATE: Professor Myers (of Pharyngula) writes to me as follows:
"In regards to your post on the guys mangling your opinion on the Establishment Clause, the commenter who first brought up that bizarre interpretation of your article is a guy named 'Navy Davy'.
"You might be interested to know that 'Navy Davy' is a San Francisco attorney named D. David Steele who has also been prancing around on the Panda's Thumb, making an obtuse pain-in-the-ass of himself. He likes to pretend that he's an impartial judge of the validity of the arguments there, which means he spends a lot of time cautiously defending creationists -- and that he thinks there is a fair case to be made for creationism tells you what side he's really on.
"It seems he's also an HIV denier. Yes, published on the website of that David Icke: former sportscaster, fervid Nazi sympathizer, believer in blood-slurping Retiloids from outer space in disguise who are taking over the government. Icke believes that George W Bush, Queen Elizabeth, and Hillary Clinton are actually lizards from Mars. Perhaps Navy Davy thinks that is a reasonable point of view, too.
"Just thought this would help put Navy Davy's comments in perspective...."
Lovely....
