As one of my Canadian friends (someone who has been all over Europe and Israel) observes, coming to the U.S. is like arriving on the planet mars: the ideological homogeneity of the media (only slightly less so in the blogosphere--see, e.g., the top ten-or-so here), the in-your-face religiosity of the public culture, and the nationalist parochialism. How to explain it?
