In today's in-box, a graduate student at a top 50 department writes:
"I should also pass along my thanks to you for all your work on the
Report. Naturally, as a student at [a program not ranked more highly], I'm somewhat disgruntled about the rankings. Nevertheless, I have found the Report extremely informative and helpful, and I would have been absolutely ignorant about graduate schools in philosophy were it not for what I learned
by reading your website. I went to a small Catholic college, and the
faculty there really just couldn't help me at all with the selection of an 'analytic' program, for they were all educated outside the analytic tradition. In fact, it was the update service that brought me to [name omitted]. I didn't apply here during the regular application season, since (by that time) I wanted to do [field omitted]: I applied [later in the season], following the raid of the [name omitted] department by [name omitted] and the job offer from [name omitted] to [name omitted], both of which I learned about only because of the update service. Fortunately, [the department I applied to] wound up having a fellowship to offer me.... So I am deeply indebted to your Report for a number of reasons. Thank you!"
You're welcome. This correspondent also raised some important issues about how the faculty lists are compiled for purposes of the reputational survey, an issue that I will surely be taking up with the Advisory Board next spring.
