Please Post Information about Cancelled Job Searches Here
Karen Bennett (Cornell) writes with a very good suggestion:
As you know, the economic situation is hitting a lot of universities pretty hard. Various schools have hiring freezes, or "pauses", and so forth. As placement director at Cornell this year, I'm hearing a steady trickle of rumors about positions advertised in the JFP that have since either been canceled or at least turned into merely possible positions. Both job candidates and placement directors would benefit if this information were collected in one place. Could you post about this, and open the comments for departments to post updates to their ads?
In this spirit, Professor Bennett also volunteers the following information about Cornell (her format is a good one to follow):
Cornell: advertised one open-rank position with additional positions possible. The additional positions are now apparently impossible; we will hire at most one.
Only signed posts by faculty at the hiring department will be approved for this thread. Please post only once; comments may take awhile to appear.

Unfortunately, Stanford's junior search in Core has been cancelled. Word that it was cancelled came just as the department was scheduled to meet to decide upon a short list to be interviewed.
It should be noted that the Philosophy Department is not being singled out. All searches in the School of Humanities and Sciences funded out of general funds have been cancelled.
These are very tough times!

The search for the advertised position in formal epistemology (JFP 179 #100) at the University of Maryland at College Park has been cancelled due to budgetary reasons. (12/2/2008)
Caltech still has a position to fill in the humanities, but applicants for this position now will be in competition with applicants for positions in areas of the humanities outside of philosophy. This change is the result of financial considerations. (11/26/2008)
[Note from BL: Mr. Huber sent me copies of the e-mail and letter from the affected departments confirming the above]

The search for the advertised position in metaphysics at Ohio University has unfortunately been suspended (as have searches in many other departments). In a letter to department chairs, Dean Ben Ogles writes: "By suspending (rather than closing) the searches, I am leaving open the remote possibility that the budget situation could improve (e.g., the new administration provides assistance to states). At present, however, it seems very unlikely that we will be able to re-open the searches."
I believe that candidates on our short list have already been informed of the situation.

The search in philosophy of mind/philosophy of language at the University of Western Ontario has been suspended. We expect a two year pause in hiring but that may change if the financial climate improves. This is part of a university wide initiative.
