Friday Poem: "Memphis to Austin Talking"

Memphis to Austin Talking
      (for Courtney)

Now here is the wonder of it
A rightness to the talk
Something planted sensing springtime
And the warming of the earth
Discovery unfurrowed as if newly made
The past recaptured at the future's birth

And vaguely in the background
A passage through the dark
Rising out of Memphis dizzy in its pride
Westerly to Shreveport aglow with self-delight
And a guilty glance toward Waco
As it burns into the night

Then to Austin and dispersion
To our almost separate lives
